What is EDT?

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training program for learner drivers in Ireland that aims to help them become safe and competent drivers. The program consists of 12 one-hour lessons with a qualified driving instructor and covers a range of driving topics. EDT was introduced in 2011 as part of the RSA's efforts to improve road safety for novice drivers. To enroll in EDT, learners must hold a valid learner permit, have completed the driver theory test, and have a qualified driving instructor registered with the RSA to supervise their training.

Complete your Theory Test

The theory test is the first step in your driving journey. You can apply to do the test on theorytest.ie

Second

Complete your Essential Driver Training Course

Before you can take your driving test, you must (a) complete your EDT and (b) satisfy the 6 month rule. First time learner permit holders for cars must wait at least six months from receiving their license before they can sit the test.

Last

Completing your Driving Test

Once you have completed your 12 EDT lessons, you can apply for your driving test online. Our highly trained instructor has experience performing driving tests, and will help you pass first time.
